So true and pretty funny!
Veronica Erb was at the IA Summit talking about this. I think it’s such a valuable tool for people of any profession
The latest issue of American Libraries features the new and many ways libraries are incorporating instructional/interaction design into its focus. For a recent HCI class, a few other students and I took a look at UCLA’s Young RSearch LIbrary and their new research commons. The commons houses pod type structures complete with LCD screens that a meant for working In a collaborative framework. It’s interesting to see how more libraries are heading into the community/collaborative type model that encourages discussion instead if the typical solo work atmosphere. In YRL’s case, this commons isn’t being used effectively in the collaborative manner that it was intended, as most students are still conforming to the silent, solo work in these open spaces. Perhaps the issue revolves around trying to merge what education has taught us a library is to be ( quiet, study spaces for personal work)and the new mold toward collaborative/ social learning environments complete with coffee shops that the 21st century library—acdemic or public—is molding into. It would be interesting to not if these other spaces awre having similar issues and if education in use would be all it took to change attitudes.
Heading to iasummit2012! Looking toward to it and the beautiful city of New Orleans
Does this mean I can watch Sherlock and Downton Abbey months in advance of the US airing?
“And on the subject of burning books: I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles.”
“So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.”
” — Kurt Vonnegut (via bardsandsages)Some tool just asked me if there was a “method to our madness.”
No, no. We just put all the books wherever we want and hope that serendipity is on our side when it’s time to find something.
Because of Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, I went online to UCSD to see more about their Dr. Seuss Archive. I had no idea he also drew political cartoons and advertisements.
The story is published on the London Review of Books website.
Written for a teacher she was in love with, its a bizarre tale about: “a thoughtless young rat who escapes his father’s protective care in search of adventure in the countryside and comes to a sorry end.”
I’m sure its well written but hopefully this teacher ran not walked from her. Charlotte should have left tales of love to Emily: she wrote tragic love so well. Charlotte’s love tales were bizarre and controlling, just never a fan of Jane Eyre. I get to frustrated while reading.
